How Quickly We Forget

When things are going well we may not think about how we are faring. It’s almost as though we take our state of being for granted. Sure, we have our occasional aches and pains. We may overcook a meal, arrive late for an appointment, or get angry when we get stuck in traffic. We have those aw man moments, but we quickly get over them. Life is good. We are walking by faith. But when things in our lives are not going the way we have planned, the way we expect them to go or the way we would like for them to go we can become discouraged. When our brief aw man moments linger we may sink into despair. We may have doubt, or even question whether we are in Gods will. We may even say to ourselves this is too much. Don’t allow your emotions to keep you from your destiny. The enemy will try to convince you that you are not qualified for what God has told you that you are qualified. He will use whomever, or whatever he can, including your own thoughts to persuade you into thinking that you are not going to make it, that you are incapable of reaching your goal or achieving your destiny. The enemy wants you to forget that your life is predestined. He wants you to forget that God created your destiny before you were born. He wants you to forget that what God has purposed no man can stop. Today may be bright and sunny, we are out and about, enjoying life. But when the storm comes we run for cover. We pull our heads into our shell like a tortoise. We may even shut down. Instead of praising God like we were when it was sunny, depending on the severity of our storm, we may barely open our mouth to pray. Where’s our faith? We read in James 1:23-24 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. Are you forgetting who you are? If we are walking by faith only when things are going well, are we really walking by faith? I believe we are as the man James has described. When things are going well we are standing on Gods promises, proclaiming them to the world. But when things go awry rather than Gods promises being in the forefront of our mind we allow our situation, the cares of the world or whatever the enemy is using to distract us to take precedence. We forget whose we are, children of the most high God, and we forget who we are, a royal priesthood, a chosen generation, the righteousness of God. God is saying to you this day “I have given you my promise, and unlike man I cannot lie.” 2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Whatever God has promised you will come to pass. Don’t give up on the you God created you to be. Stand firm on His promises. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. You are more than a conqueror. Overcoming is your destiny.

Now What?

We have all heard the following sayings. It’s always darkest before dawn, every dark cloud has a silver lining and your breakthrough is right around the corner. All of these words are spoken to encourage us from giving up when we start doubting that God’s promises for our life or those that we love will ever come to pass.  But happens while are waiting? What do you do? You have heard a word from the Lord. You may have even received confirmation. You’re excited. You wait patiently. Then your patience wears thin.

You talk to God. Lord I know I heard from You and I believe You are going to do what You said you would do, but when? You read about Joseph and all he endured at the hands of his own family. You read about how he was falsely accused, spent time in jail, forgotten about by someone he was trying to help, and through it all how the favor of God was always on him. In your frustration you say to yourself but that was Joseph, what about me?

You read about Job and how he lost everything. How his friends questioned if he was somehow at fault for what occurred in his life. You wonder if there is something you may have done to cause you to be stuck; not moving forward in what you truly believe is Gods desire for your life. You try to help God out, taking steps that you think may move you towards your destiny, but do not achieve the results you expect. Your frustration builds. You feel a mixture of emotions. You’re disappointed, sad; you may feel inadequate even though deep down inside you have not given up hope. The words of encouragement from those that believe in what God is doing in your life seem to fall on deaf ears.

Those standing on the outside that are supporting you don’t have a clue as to how you really feel or what you are going through you say to yourself, forgetting about the countless times you have been the encourager as opposed to the one that needs encouraging.

So what do you do? As difficult as it may be, you continue to do what you are doing. You wait patiently on the Lord. You tarry until He manifests His promise.

When Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. He asked them to wait while he went up to pray to God. When Jesus went back to the disciples he found them asleep and asked if they could not watch with Him an hour. He left them a second time and returned only to find them sleeping again at which time He said the spirit indeed is wiling but the flesh is weak.  The third time that He found them asleep He told them to take their rest because the hour was at hand.

I believe we can apply this to our time of waiting on the Lord. Our spirit is willing but our flesh is weak. Our spirit is saying yes Lord, I know this is You, yes Lord, I will wait, yes Lord I will trust in You, yes Lord I will do what You want me to do, but oh that flesh! The flesh wants to lean to its own understanding. The flesh wants to rely on what it can see, hear, feel and imagine. The flesh tells you it’s not going to happen. The flesh tries to convince you to give up. The flesh brings doubt and makes you ask what do I do if it doesn’t turn out the way I expect it to?

Whoa! Hold on! Stop it right there! Why in the world do we listen to this corrupt flesh that is so weak as Jesus said to his disciples that it enters into temptation, which in the case of our waiting is becoming doubtful and weary?

There is a God that has not, cannot and will not lie. He has made you a promise. We read in Habakkuk 2:3 for the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

During this time of waiting take your mind off of yourself. Encourage someone else. You may not be where you want to be but you are not where you were when you started. Help someone else get to where you are now.

I’m not saying it will be easy. What you are feeling is real, but remember what we read in 1Peter 5:10 but the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.  Many of us get stuck in the suffering, but what we don’t realize is that it is the suffering that will perfect, establish and strengthen us. Once we have this understanding we become settled in Gods promise and even this ole flesh can’t persuade us otherwise. Hang in there! I’m waiting for your praise report.

Don’t Let Your Mind Defeat You

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind. Last week’s blog was on reflection, reflecting on your finances, your budget, and your saving habits. Some of you may have already started saving your receipts, requested a copy of your credit report and are on your way to a financially savvy 2014. Congratulations for taking those steps!

Others of you may ask yourself what’s the use? You may say you have tried before but were unable to commit to making changes or something unexpected happened which prevented you from moving forward.

So often we allow what has happened in the past or what we anticipate may happen in the future to prevent us from moving forward and accomplishing our goals. What we need to ask ourselves is what is stopping me from moving forward. We make excuses, some valid and some invalid, but even those that are valid can be overcome.

When I had breast cancer I remember having a conversation with an uncle. He referred to me as being sick. I quickly told him I was not sick. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. In my opinion I was not sick. I had breast cancer. God told me I would not die so I knew I would get better. Some of my chemotherapy treatments made me sick. I became physically ill, I was nauseas. That was what I considered as being sick.

Oftentimes we allow the thoughts in our mind to defeat us. We may not have any idea of what we can or cannot do, how things are going to turn out, whether or not we can achieve a goal but a single thought can take root and immobilize us. Our quest is to find that root. Some of us don’t have a clue as to why we think we can’t succeed we just believe that we cannot.

A few years ago we had a strange weed growing in our yard. The yard was being treated but rather than die the weeds increased. Finally my husband took a picture of the weed to a local lawn and garden store. They immediately identified the weed and told my husband what he should use to kill the weed. The recommended weed killer not only destroyed the weed from the root it prevented future growth of new weeds while protecting the healthy grass around it.

Whether you are making excuses, ignoring what is preventing you from moving forward, or even believing that there is nothing that is immobilizing you it is imperative that you admit there is something that is standing in your way then identify it. Many times we know what it is but are afraid to admit it. Again, God has not given us the spirit of fear. He cannot give us what is not in Him. Face whatever it is and ask God for the strength to overcome it.

Perhaps you have tried unsuccessfully in the past to overcome circumstances that you thought were standing in your way. Don’t give up, try again, this time seek God first and ask Him to show you what it is that you must overcome. You may be trying to overcome what you think is the problem when it could be something completely different, just as my husband was treating the wrong type of weed you may be trying to overcome something that is not really standing in your way. With God’s help you can overcome anything and everything. Let Him show you what is really standing in the way and allow Him to help you move it out of the way. As we read in John 8:36 if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Mark 11:23 for verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever
